Today marks the beginning of testing for Homespun Laundry Pods and Powdered Detergent.
Laundry is one of those necessary evils in life. No one really enjoys doing it, but you need clean clothes right? Ever think of all the chemicals in off-the-shelf laundry detergent? If you have sensitive skin, like my family, I bet you have.
I'm excited about this since we just got a "new-to-us" HE front-loading washing machine and I used to use pods myself all the time. Since making the move to homemade products, I thought that using pods were a thing of the past, but not so!
I also had a customer ask "is homemade detergent safe for my HE washing machine", so I started doing some research.
It seems the #1 factor between a regular washing machine and an HE washing machine is suds.
HE washing machines are built to conserve water, so they use minimal water when running a cycle. They have sensors that detect the size of your load and adjust the amount of water used accordingly. Regular detergent (regardless of if it's powder, liquid or pods/tabs) creates a fair amount of suds. These suds can confuse the sensors in your HE washing machine and cause it to use more water than actually necessary to clean your clothes.
The good thing about homemade laundry detergents is that they already, by nature, produce minimal suds (most homemade household products produce much less suds than what you're used to with store bought products). There are no additional "sudsing agents" added to it. This means that our Homespun Detergents are perfectly safe for your HE washer, as well as your regular washer because they do not produce the extra suds that can affect your sensors.
Then, there's the #2 factor with detergents. Many of them, because of the chemicals added to them, can leave a film or residue on your washer. Homespun Detergents contain only the ingredients that clean and make your clothes smell fresh. No added chemicals to leave those nasty residues behind in your washer!
Keep in mind, especially with Front-loading HE washing machines, that keeping your machine clean is very important to it's overall "health". You should clean the inside of your machine about once a month to prevent mold and mildew, the things that usually result in stinky machines and clothes. These odor problems are usually caused by moisture, especially in the summer, building up inside your machine.
It's a good rule of thumb when you finish with the washing machine, especially in a front loader, to wipe the drum out with a dry cloth to prevent condensation between cleanings.
Just remember if you have a front-loading machine, to only use a liquid detergent that is free of clumps in your dispenser. If you find your detergent has clumps in it, which sometimes happens with homemade detergents, put it in the drum instead before adding clothes. You should always put powdered detergents (including pods and tablets) in the drum before adding clothes rather than in the detergent dispenser.
Don't forget, you can already purchase Homespun Liquid Laundry Detergent here!
I hope this helps shine some light on your laundry experience!

HSE Shop: HSE Laundry Detergent
I have been making our laundry detergent for probably 2 years now. Our family is filled with people with varying sensitivity issues and they now rely on HSE Laundry Detergent because it is gentle on your skin and doesn't contain all those chemicals you can't pronounce.
Let's be honest here, I've forgotten about the laundry in the washing machine just like I'm sure nearly everyone else has. Ever open the machine and get hit with that sour smell?
Using HSE Laundry Detergent, I only have to rewash the clothes to get the smell out.
HSE Laundry Detergent is gentle on my delicate clothes and tough on extra dirty ones.
It is also safe for all types of machines, including HE machines.
Right now, we have 1 bottle (gallon) of Lavender left and 4 unscented.
Stop by our shop and check out our HSE Laundry Detergent today!

Day to Day: Family Ties
Today, I'd like to tell you a story. This is a story of 2 sisters, Midge and Zon...
Zon was the older of the two sisters, and as such, she often found all the cool stuff first. It was Zon who first introduced Midge to blogging many years ago.
Over the years, both sisters have flitted in and out of the blogging world, sometimes together, other times separately. Midge somehow always felt incomplete when Zon wasn't blogging though since it was her that brought blogging into Midge's life...
Fast forward to last night...
Needless to say, I was shocked. Zon hasn't blogged in a very long time now and I've struggled without her.
I'm happy to say that my sister is once again blogging and now my life feels complete again.
Go check out her blog for her humor and her take on her life and the world around her.

Homespun Kitchen: Homespun Superbowl Dip
Superbowl Dip
In our house, we love the Superbowl and no Game Day is complete without my Superbowl Dip!
This is a recipe that I originally learned from one of Paul's aunts (love you Aunt Debbie) back before we got married. I ate so much of it that I made myself sick off of it!
That aside, it's got to be one of the best dips I've ever had, and it's super simple to make too!
What you'll need:
1 pound lean ground beef (the leaner the beef, the less shrinkage) made into taco meat
(You can find the recipe I use for homemade taco seasoning here)
1 can diced tomatoes and green chilies or your favorite salsa (or homemade)
1/2 loaf cheese loaf, cubed (I know, it's processed, but it works better than anything else)
Your favorite tortilla chips
To make:
- Make your taco meat and set aside.
- In your crockpot, add taco meat, cheese and diced tomatoes and chilies or salsa and cheese.
- Heat on low stirring occasionally until cheese is melted and everything is heated through.
- Serve with your favorite tortilla chips.
Welcome to Homespun Essentials
When Paul and I decided to start a business, we didn't do so without much thought and planning.
This business officially began in October 2016 on Facebook and it's been in the building and planning stages since then.
We have gone back and forth about what kind of a business we wanted to run, who would be in charge of what, would we sell physical products or just monetize a website?
In the end, we decided to do a little of both. I'll be monetizing the site (this is my way to help supplement Paul's full-time day-job) as well as selling some of the things I make for our home.
Some of the things you'll find while visiting us here is a link to our Shop where you can find some of the homemade goodies I "cook up" in the Homespun Kitchen, tips and tricks for cleaning, organizing, recipes, budgeting, frugal living and living the good life without breaking the bank.
So, grab a cup of coffee or tea or even a glass of wine and enjoy your time here with us!
